The present situation and problems confronted

At the moment, there are 30 children at ICH. Their ages range from 20 days to 6 years. Most of them have been brought immediately after their mother’s death.

The intention has been to let the children stay at ICH until they reach the age of 2 years. When a child reaches this age, efforts are made to reunite the child with its family.

However, due to various socio-economic factors, this goal is not always achievable. Since the financial situation of ICH is restrained, an alternative model of caring for children over 2 years who cannot be sent back to their fathers or relatives is being used. This is the home-based care model whereby a child may live temporarily with a family. The model is acknowledged by the governmental authorities that are responsible for social welfare and it reflects the traditional model of extended family.
